What Would Hiram Do?

I am sure we all remember those bracelets that people wore, or even the bumper stickers that asked a rather moral question that we are suppose to ask ourselves with everything we do. The WWJD idea became popular sometime in the 90's when I was growing up. It was a great tool to remind us to be careful of our actions, thoughts and words.

The other day I had an idea pop in my head that reminded me of this bracelet. While going on about my normal routine here on camp a fellow Soldier asked me a simple question. Handing his hand over as to shake my hand I took it and he attempted to give me a grip asking what it meant. Immediately, it ran through my head... What Would Hiram Do?

I took my hand back and told him I had no idea what he was referring to. I informed him he was simply shaking my hand. When his response threw me off guard. "That's what someone said how Freemason's shake hands". It is no secret here in my unit that I am a Freemason. As it is no secret to anyone in the world. I am proud of my obligation and oath I took upon that alter and look forward to living up to it with every ounce of blood running through my veins.

To clarify what he was trying to do I informed him that he was wrong, the handshake he gave me was no different from any other handshake it had no apparent meaning to Freemasons anywhere. I also asked him who was feeding him such false information. So as to be aware of who to watch out for and to inform the other Freemasons in my unit to be on the watch for the same person.

So now I ask you. Have you ever come across somebody posing as a Freemason offering grips or signs? How did you handle it? Do you ask yourself "What Would Hiram Do?"
